SIX INCH is a dirty Finnish band with a dirty sounding name and even dirtier music.
Born in bleak Helsinki in the Fall of 2010, these “dark rockers” have everything going for them: a new album out (“Melancholic Whisper Of Life”), a look that kills and a unique sound that channels the rawness of rock’n’roll, while holding on to an electrifying tenderness.
After spending two decades immersed in late Romanticism, Finnish music is ready to move on. And Six Inch is proof of that.
Let’s be honest…who isn’t tired, at least a wee bit, of love metal?
We got a hold of Mr. “Mad Hatter” Andy Moisio and questioned him regarding this new apparition on the scene of Finnish metal.
Below you can read the result for yourself…and find out some new and intriguing details regarding rock music, and its…size.
Tell us the story of „Six Inch”. When were you formed, why, what inspired you to become rockers.
(Band) Six Inch was formed in Helsinki, Finland in the grey autumn of 2010. After a few line-up changes, we recruited Andy Moisio, a singer with a strong and really personal voice. He became our vocalist in the spring of 2011. During the winter months of 2012, violinist Pinja and keyboardist Nestori joined the band so the sound became darker, more mysterious, and utterly passionate. That’s how Six Inch finally got its own totally foggy, romantic and „misty feeling” sound.
Where does the name come from?
(Andy) It has to do with a Finnish man’s average penis length…but the sound is bigger than that.
As Finnish „staple” bands such as HIM, Nightwish and The 69 Eyes have become more and more commercial, younger bands seem to take a different approach to that Gothic recipe. Von Hertzen Brothers, Vanity Beach, Six Inch, your music mixes different and seemingly opposite styles. Is a sort of revolt against the used-up sounds of the „famous” bands?
We are six different personalities and we all contribute to the songwriting, which gives birth to a new and different sound. We’re against nothing…against everything. It’s all just a big passion for music.
Your description of your genre is „dark rock”. That sounds a bit generic so maybe you would like to elaborate a bit for those people who are fond of labels and need a more thorough description.
Bleak but hopeful thoughts; dark and beautiful, but raw sounds. We are a vampire romance, with the bitter taste of blood in the mouth. It’s not Rock, it’s not Metal, but it’s both.. Did you get that? Because I don’t! (laughs)
Tell us more about the new album. What is the story behind it?
I think that the album represents a new facet of gothic metal. It is carved from wood, not with finesse, but with an axe. The name of the album is „Melancholic Whisper Of Life” and that says it all. It’s a melancholy sound in the middle of the „ball-freezing” cold winter. The story behind it is quite simply unknown. The album is self recorded and self-produced.
As Sweden goes in a metal direction, Finland seems to be retreating into a more experimental underground. How exactly has the scene changed in the last years?
Finland has the courage to do what it wants. It’s always been that way…that’s why we have such unique bands. The underground is the new mainstream.
Your new video for „Whore of the Medical Science” is very disturbing, featuring a girl who is fed pills and who is subjected to some form of abuse. What inspired it? It speaks about madness, schizophrenia, taming the soul etc.
“Whore of the medical science” deals with social exclusion and with the cruelty of pharmaceutic companies.
Your look is very strong and it is inspired by classic popular culture heroes, such as Dracula (top-hat, round glasses). Many bands have given up on „looking” transgressive and rock’n’roll. Is it important to always have such an appearance, as an artist?
I dress how I feel is best for me… I am a big fan of movies, and perhaps that’s where I find my inspiration. Maybe I was born in the wrong century, who knows? Perhaps my inspiration is an excessively romantic point of view and a limited sense of reality (laughs). Go Mad Hatter!
How will you convince the good dark rockers from Romania to become your fans?
Take Six Inch between your good and your evil and enjoy the ride. We have a lot of new tricks for you. Take one inch from your thoughts and we will give you the remaining five. Peace out.
